Wool Fat (Lanolin)
It is an anhydrous fat prepared from the wool of sheep, Ovis aries (Bovidae).
Properties: Pale yellow tenacious material with faint characteristic
odor.
Insoluble in water but can incorporate it.
Test of identity Dissolve 1 g of the fat in 3 ml acetic anhydride + 0.3
(Cholesterol): ml H2SO4 → pink → green → blue color.
Constituents: • Steroids: Cholestrol, Isocholestrol
Uses:
• Unstaurated C27 alcohol, free or esterified with:
Lanoceric acid
Lanopalmitic acid
Carnaubic acid
Other fatty acids
▪ Emollient base for creams and ointments.
▪ It is also used as a raw material for producing
vitamin D3.
