INTEGRATED BIOPROCESSING RESEARCH LAB AT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
The Integrated Bioprocessing Research Lab project, built for the University of Illinois, included the new construction of a 42,000-square-foot research laboratory facility in Urbana, IL. The facility houses a 9,000-square-foot, two- story processing space for agricultural research, state-of-the art teaching spaces, and analysis laboratories for biotechnology, fermenting, corn milling and soy bean processing. These laboratories provide cutting edge equipment for analysis, deconstruction, fermentation, and thermo-chemical processes. Construction consisted of a cast-in-place concrete foundation, a steel structural frame, masonry exterior, and a single ply roof. The project also features high bay spaces, analytic laboratory spaces, classrooms, administrative spaces, specialized laboratory equipment for co-product evaluation and optimization of cellulosic material into energy, and biomass pre-treatment skids. This project achieved LEED Silver Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for low- emitting materials including adhesives and sealants. Due to CORE’s implementation of a design by Bailey Edward, the Integrated Bioprocessing Research Lab project has increased bio-energy value for the application of innovative discoveries for small production and commercial markets of bio-fuels.
