On Track to Success
program gains momentum

WHAT IS THE ON TRACK TO SUCCESS PROGRAM? On Track was inspired by Pathways to Education,
based in Toronto’s Regent Park area. Its program saw
United Way has spent the last two years leading the graduation rates double, and attendance in post-

summer. Students and their families receive wrap-around
services, including the chance for students to earn up
to $4,000 for post-secondary education, free tutoring,
social and recreational activities, as well as volunteering,
career building and mentoring opportunities. With the
community’s support, United Way hopes to introduce a
new grade nine cohort each year, growing the program to
80 students over four years.

Hunger, declining mental health, and poor academic
performance, for example, can all be linked to low
income. Each of these obstacles can become a brick in
a wall between a young person and his or her ability to
reach their potential.

“Supporting students now, who will go on to find good
paying jobs, will pay dividends back to the community over
the long run,” says Lorraine Goddard, United Way CEO.
“We know that education is the most effective pathway to
life success and this program supports that aim.”
