Adverbs: Definition, Characteristics, Function and Examples
Definition
Before, we discuss about what adverbs are, read the text.
See the words in bold.
Study the explanation.
Coach Bambang is now giving instructions to his players. She
is preparing them for the final match held the following day.
The man with short brown hair and clear voice instructs his
players to attack quickly and pass the ball accurately. He asks
his strikers to be in the right position so that other players can
easily pass the ball to create quick goals. He orders them to
move fast and make a good shot to the goal frequently. She also
reminds the players to be wary of counter attacks from the
opponents.
Coach Bambang always uses her white board to explain his strategy. His hand draws the strategy on the board
clearly. Everyone acknowledges his experienced coach's tactical prowess. The short, but clear briefing is
easily understood by the players there. He hopes her team can apply the strategy successfully.
The words in bold are called adverbs.
An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (“he sings loudly”), an adjective (“very tall”), another
adverb (“ended too quickly”), or even a whole sentence (“Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella.”).
Adverbs often end in -ly, but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.
Adverbs are words that answer questions how, when, where, how often, and how much.
Study kinds of adverbs below.
1. Adverbs of manner answer questions how. They end in -ly, such as strongly, quickly, happily,
diligently.
Example:
Aldi : You smashed the shuttlecock strongly. I'm certain you join a badminton club.
Ria : That's true!
2. Adverbs of time answer questions when.
Example:
Aldi : When do you practice badminton?
Ria : Tomorrow afternoon after school.
