By this time the queen had arrived, because the king had dragged all
the blankets off the bed and she was beginning to freeze.
“I was looking for the palace,” said the girl, “But it was snowing, and I
got lost. You see, I’m a princess and I heard that there is a prince here,
who is looking for a suitable bride. Perhaps I am she?”
The king’s eyebrows went up and down, and so did the queen’s, but
their eyebrows were not synchronized.
“Perhaps you am she?” said the king.
“Give us a little time to think about this,” said the queen, “We do not
even know if you are telling the truth.”
“I am very very rich,” said the princess, “Whoever marries me will
become fabulously wealthy!”.
“You’ll do!” said the king, grinning from ear to ear.
“Yesssirr!” said the queen, “She’s telling the truth!”
“I was joking,” smiled the girl.
Jeremiah crept closer to the door and watched and listened, but all he
could hear now was the sound of Mrs. MacCreadle’s voice.
“Take out your work books,” she was saying, “We have some
questions to answer.
