Chapter Two
The Princess and the Pea
The bell stopped ringing and Mrs. Creadle stood up and clapped her
hands.
“Who is listening?” she said, in a sing-song voice.
Nobody was listening, so she tried again.
“WHO IS LISS – EN - NING!?”
“I am listening!” said a girl close to her.
“I’m listening too!” shouted a boy.
“I have a guinea pig called Ralph!” said another boy.
Mrs. MacCreadle was thin, and old, and wore glasses and false teeth,
but she was very smart. She was dangerously smart. She could count up
to a hundred by fives, and divide a hundred by 2 faster than a fly could
spit.
“Today we have a fairy story, and then I’m going to ask you
questions… so you’d better be listening,” She said.
“What’s the story called?”
“I will not read until the room is quiet!”
