Chapter Three
Questions
Jeremiah tried to stay in the royal dining room, listening to what the
king and queen were saying, but Mrs. MacCreadle’s voice shattered the
daydream like a hot knife through butter, or a rabid lawnmower through
soft grass. The class was restless. Desks opened, scruffy books appeared,
pencils dropped on the floor and a dart sailed gracefully past Jeremiah’s
foot.
“Now,” said the teacher, “Question one. Where do you think the poor
young girl, who arrived at the castle gates, came from?”
Jeremiah had no idea where the poor young girl had come from. He
could have found out if the teacher had left him in the royal dining room
a bit longer, but now he was back in the classroom. He decided to forget
about the classroom and… he slipped back into the castle to see what
happened next.
“Th-thank you,” the girl was saying, as she hunched forward and held
her hands out to catch the warmth from the fire. The queen hurried away
to prepare a cup of hot milk and the king waited respectfully until she
returned.
