Chapter Nine
It’s a Gas.
That night Jeremiah had some strange dreams. In one of them he was in
a large cardboard box, along with lots of other people. Something lifted
the box and tipped it over and he and the other people tumbled out. They
landed in a bowl, then milk was tipped in and sugar sprinkled on their
heads, then a big, shiny spoon came down out of the sky and scooped
them up, and up…
Jeremiah woke and got out of bed. He swept the curtains aside and
stared at the starry sky. Somewhere out there, he knew, there was a
space ship, flying towards Earth. He had to do something but what could
he, a puny little boy, do against the might of an immensely powerful
invading alien! The secrets that Mr. Flannel had told him were burning a
hole in his head! The smoke was coming out his ears! He wanted to tell
someone, but who would believe him?
He ran through the house and jumped on his parent’s bed. They were
both asleep but they soon woke up.
“What is it Jeremy?” said mum, sleepily.
“They’re coming!” whispered Jeremiah, “We have to hide!”
