Foreword
Hey Alan, why don't you write a book?
For various reasons and in the context of everyday life, I
keep most of what I describe in this book to myself. OK,
some folks that know me might argue that, but yes, every
now and then I will succumb to an urge and wax
philosophically. It is at this point that someone will tell me
to pretty much just shut up and write the dang book,
already — so here it is.
It should be noted here that for the most part, these are not
hard convictions but theories based on observation,
education, personal experience, and a willingness (if not a
compulsion) to discover who, as human beings, we really
are. Heck, I speak at length here about the concept of
embracing the mystery of life so it would be pretty
hypocritical of me to try to force-feed these concepts as
known hard and fast truths. Yes, I may have a strong faith
that a lot of this is true, but I certainly cannot be sure or be
completely convinced of it. You shouldn't be, either.
Yes, I know that while reading this it will sound as though
I'm pretty convinced of most of what I have written, but I
found that it became too wordy to qualify faith over
conviction every time I talk about a possible truth. So
please, Dear Reader, allow me to ask you to assume that
these are my faiths, often strong and well-developed ones
for sure, but not complete convictions as you read this book.
I only share the thoughts in this book in the hope that they
might help someone out there as they navigate the difficult
roads of life on this planet.
I have so many people to thank for guiding me to a point to
where I could actually start to write these things down that
