The basics – Professional Speak
1. Not misuse authority or office for personal gain;
2. Comply with the laws of Australia and operate within the spirit of those laws;
3. Avoid all discriminatory practices including those relating to race, sex, religion and politics;
4. Have regard for the interests of society in acting loyally and honestly in carrying out the
policies of the organisation;
5. Not injure or attempt to injure, maliciously or recklessly, directly or indirectly, the
professional reputation of others;
6. Respect the confidentiality of information which comes to them in the course of their
duties;
7. Engage in continued learning to improve managerial competence and pursue new ideas
and advances in technology;
8. The effective and economic management of all available resources;
9. The creation of a humane, safe, healthy and satisfying working environment;
10. The development of effective communications, understandings and cooperation between
all employees at all levels;
11. The practice of delegation of authority wherever possible and the acceptance of
responsibility for the work of subordinates;
12. The fair and equitable treatment of employees;
13. Making every endeavour to conserve the environment, balancing the rights of future
generations with current economic needs; and
14. Preserving and, wherever possible, improving the quality of life within the organisation’s
sphere of influence.
The basics - Plain Speak
1. Never send an email when you are angry;
2. Don’t speak to each other in a way that you wouldn’t want your best customer to hear
(especially foul language);
3. Act with this belief - ‘when my subordinate fails, I fail’; and
4. Give each other permission to call out bad behaviour.
