Lab (8): Tablets Dissolution Test & Drug Content Uniformity Test
I) Tablets Dissolution Test:
Objective:
To investigate the percentage amount of drug dissolved.
The dissolution test for tablet is necessary to:
1- Ensure the tablet dissolution rate is at a desired one.
2- If it is not what we predicted, we will have to reformulate or find out what went wrong
during the formulation of tablets.
3- Besides, it also allows us to know the bioavailability of the active ingredient in the body
to give the expected pharmacological effects effectively.
4- To know the specific pH at which the drug dissolved best.
Dissolution rate:
• It is the release of the drug from the tablet, and the absorption of the drug takes place only
after drug being in solution.
• The tablet may disintegrate rapidly, but the drug may not be available to the patient due to
slow release of the drug from particles. This tablet will be unaccepted theoretically, so the
dissolution time will be more accurate for the availability of the drug from the tablet than
the disintegration time.
