Poliomyelitis
Caused by polioviruses, which affect AHC and motor nuclei of brain stem →
lower motor neuron weakness.
Criteria of weakness and paralysis :
Acute onset
lower motor neuron weakness
Asymmetrical and spotty distribution → affecting mainly large muscle groups
No sensory loss
The course is maximum in the first few days then some regression may occurs
Treatment:
Acute stage: isolation and supportive treatment.
Chronic stage: physiotherapy and orthopedic management.
