3% by the number of years that you are younger than 75 -- your discount equals 10 years x 3%,
or 30%, and that discount will be reduced by 3% each year until you turn 75. If you acquire an
AARP policy, that means you may have two increases a year – one a 3% increase associated
with the reduced discount (until you turn 75) and the other an increase for health care inflation.
AARP policies can be good choices if they are attractively priced, but you should be aware that
your premiums may rise more quickly than with many other insurers. After you turn 75, the
AARP premiums will likely increase more slowly.
In addition to discounts, some insurers provide extra benefits such as membership in Silver
Sneakers, which give you access to more than 12,000 gyms and health clubs nationally.
Not all doctors accept Medicare approved rates.
I was unable to verify that all your doctors accept Medicare-approved rates. When a doctor
does not accept Medicare-approved rates, he or she can charge up to 15% more than the
approved rates. Usually, these extra charges a small – a few dollars – but in the case of an
expensive treatment or procedure, they could be substantial
Drs. Amir, Oza, and Tackett all are listed as accepting Medicare’s approved rates, but the others
are not. Because Medicare does not cover routine dental care, few dentists are Medicare
providers, and that may include Dr. Main. Drs. Knecht and Spears are not listed, but that could
be because they are affiliated with other provider groups.
When a doctor charges more than the approved rates, Plans F and G in your evaluation will
cover the added charge but plans N and L will not. Again, this is usually not a significant issue,
but if you wanted to verify whether a doctor accepts Medicare-approved rates, you can contact
his/her office and ask.
Rx Drug Plan Coverage
As mentioned earlier, people who have Medigap policies are required to have Part D stand-
alone plans. In your area none of the lowest-cost plans for your Rx drugs have Rite-Aid as a
preferred pharmacy. Although you can still get your prescriptions filled at Rite-Aid, you will pay
somewhat more. CVS pharmacies are preferred pharmacies for the plans that have the lowest
costs for your drugs.
For the 2019 plan year, the lowest-cost plan for your drugs is the Wellcare Value Script
Prescription Drug Plan (or PDP), and its estimated annual costs are $602 if you get refills at a
CVS pharmacy.
But the Wellcare Value Script plan is not listed among the 2018 plans in your area, which means
that you cannot enroll in it to get coverage for November and December. Shown at the top of
the following page are the lowest-cost plans for the last two months of this year as well as for
the 2019 plan year.
