The ambitious scientist finally earned his
professorship in mid 1909, at which time he
said goodbye to his job as a patent clerk.
He became an “associate professor” of
theoretical physics, which was a new position
created specifically for him at the University
of Zurich.
This new job was a big step up from his
privatdozent position in Bern, but it was not
