  Serving Faithfully
In August 2017, when Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and Louisiana, 15 chaplains volunteered at four shelters in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where evacuees waited to return home. Chaplains listened to stories about the loss of homes and concerns about an uncertain future.
Several chaplains collaborated to help evacuees find resources for food, medical equipment and federal aid. Our chaplains served over 3,000 meals. One chaplain helped connect five teenagers whose mother had passed away and father was in intensive care with their family in Virginia.
Several BSWH chaplains also serve as chaplains in the National Guard or Armed Forces Reserves. Chaplains Lauren Hughes and Chuck Wallace were both called up for three weeks of special service after Hurricane Harvey. Lt. Hughes
and Col. Wallace provided pastoral support to military personnel performing rescue work. A week after returning from serving on the Texas coast, Chaplain Wallace was activated again for six weeks of military ministry duty when Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico.
