retreat which he hoped would be given by a Redemp-
      torist Father.
In the concluding paragraph he asked them to implore
Divine assistance: "Both of you pray much, for the tem-
poral needs are serious. Pray likewise for the progress
of the Congregation in general. It has been impossible
for me to go to America: lack of money.* Pray to the
Immaculate Heart of Mary during this month. Pray also
to St. Joseph for my intention. I greet the both of you."
Two days later in a letter to Father Van Beek he
spoke of his worries: "Our Congregation is actually in
great distress. If only you were able to find the bird
that lays the golden eggsl We are praying for a'favor-
able outcome. Will you have the Deaf-Mutes make two
or three novenas? Let an interval come between them.
Do not name us directly. I hope much for good results
      from their prayers."

look encouraging but the financial problem has not
      been solved. God will provide."

had to confess to Father Renardy, the treasurer of that
institution, that he could not pay what he owed for
board and tuition and neither iould he give assurance
of being able to pay for coming scholastic year: "I am
not able in conscience to assume new debts, so I hope
to be able to count on your goodness by sending you
the two Brothers and asking you to admit them free if
you can in some way do this act of charity."
The answerwas, "No." Hard tlrnes had aftected the
finances at St. Trond. The decision was heartbreaking
