INVITATION TO ENGLAND 97
Brother Dominic had been ailing for two year$, ever
since his return from St. Michelgestel.
Brother Ryken had chosen Biother Alphonse to be
in charge at Bury,'brit in December he had such a cold
that pneumonia was feared. Sick also were Brothers
Bernard and Vincent with skin infections. The latter
was so persistently racked by fever that Brother Ryken,
remembering his own case some years back, harbored
a suspicion of small pox.
Once again Dr. Van der Plancke was consulted by
mail, and once again the cold-sheet treatment was pre-
scribed. The rugged Brother Ryken was enthusiastic
over this recommendation. To Father Van Beek, who
had as great an interest in materia medica as his friend,
Brother Ryken explained the whole procedure and to
forestall any doubting about the effectiveness of wrap-
ping one's naked self for two hours in a sheet soaked
in ice-cold water from the pump, he added his personal
endorsement: "This treatment can cure scrofula, diseases
of the nerve, asthma, epilepsy, and even madness so long
as the brain has not been aftected."
