Later on, the Father Superior found out that on No-
vember tenth Brother Stephen had been put on the
train in New York City by Mr. Ross and tirat he had
reached Louisville on November eighteenth. It was
on November tenth that Brothers Vinient and Ignatius
had left Louisville for New York on their way to Eortorr.
With the unexpected appearance of Brothers Vincent
and_.Ignatius who could teach in English, plans were
readjusted, contracts signed, and on January Z, lgb7,
the two Xaverians from St. Patrick's ii Louiiville were
teaching at St. John's in Manchester. Father Benoit
had suggested that these men live nearer the school, but
the Founder told them to live with the Brothers who
taught at St. Augustine's. He did not want any of his
men counting their steps.
In connection with taking over this second school in
the Manchester area, the Founder gave one other ord.er,
which in the light of subsequent happening;s was perhaps
the most important decision fre frid erir made. He
named Brother Vincent, Superior of the community.
Brother Vincent, who would not reach his thirtietir
birthday until that July twelfth, was in charge of Brother
fgnatius, who had outranked him in Lo-uisville, and
Brother John Seghers and Brother Stanislaus, veterans
in Manchester. All three had at one time or another
been Superiors at this mission. Brother Vincent had had
no experience in England.
