Francis did tikewise at the Immaculate Conception
School on Eighth Street. At the close of the 1858'59
school y."t, tf,.y accepted the suggestion of Father Van
Deuteklm, the'Dutch pastor of-ihe Immaculate Con-
ieption Parish, that thiy combine their -teaching and
op'erate in his school. When the new school year got
,r'rrd.. way in August, the pastor luq"d no objection
when a hundred oi*or. boys from St. Patrick's reported
to Brother Stephen and became part of the Immaculate
Conception School.
On September 23, 1859, Father Van Deutekom ar'
rived at i'Het Walletje" in Bruges. IIe was on his way
home to Holland to visit his people, but he was attend-
ins to business first. With the approval of Bishop Spald-
in[ or rather with the sanction of Uls Excellency, Father
Valn Deutekom was authorized to act for himself and
the pastors of three other parishes:--St. Patrick's, St'
Bonitace's, and St. John's irr Louisville' They wanted
eight additional Broihers for 1860-61 school year' They
agleed to pay $250.00 per Brother- per annum and to
adrrut.e the iraveling expenses to be repaid in one or
two years.
Since he was obtaining more than he had eve"r asked
for, Brother Ryken drew up a home-made contract be-
tween himself ind "the Catholic pastors of Louisville"'
Both men signed promPtly. Father Van Deutekom was
on his way within-minutes, and Brother Ryken went to
spread thd good news among the community'
