TO AMERICA AGAIN 39
overwhelmed with sorrow and he went to bury him-
self in the church of St. Bavo (GhenQ. There he
entered in spirit into the Garden of Olives. He had
scarcely come out of this contemplation, in which
he united himself with the agony of Christ, than he
heard a thundering voice: "You will succeed, but
with much grief and sorrow. I shall make him un-
derstand that he is wrong in opposing your plan."
Yesterday evening, February 4th, in the college
chapel he had a similar vision. In the midst of his
meditation he saw a luminous cross and heard these
words: "You will succeed but you will be over-
whelmed with troubles of all kinds."
This was Father Helias' private report to the Father
Provincial who was curious, perhaps, about Ryken's
reactions. During the rest of Ryken's stay at the College,
he continued to find Father Helias a willing listener
within the limits of the recreation period and he always
remembered him as a kind friend.
Mr. Ryken fared better with Bishop Rosati in the
appointmenr at the Cathedral rectory. In spite of the
known opposition of Father Verhaegen, his trusted
friend and his vicar-general, the Bishop wanted these
Brothers or someone like them for that orphanage that
he had to build for the boys. He and Ryken talked
leisurely. The Bishop was impressed. Ryken felt at
ease. He assured His Excellency that he would provide
competent teachers of religiog and that he would send
Brothers equipped to teach the common trades. Bishop
Rosati was concerned about having instructors for the
deaf and dumb. Here Ryken could get l1'rical concern-
ing his good friend, Father Van Beek, a Hollander,
who had devised a new method of instruction and who
was actually an apostle among the deaf and dumb.
