me when I was leaving for America. He also asked
for the letters which he had examined.
He said softly that he would not destroy but
would preserve them.
Probably the Provincial ordered him to do so be-
cause I had shown him these letters.
When I had given him all the letters and writings,
he asked me sharply if I had any more of them.
Then speaking of the Provincial, he said: "It got
on his nerves, and he is very fearful," adding "me-
thinks that when seven bishops approve, this at
least means something."
Then he looked at the letters and said: "I will
send them up to Rome. You have now been to con-
fession to me. I speak as a confessor, else they would
take my stole away from me."
