334 Deception at Work

For complicated cases, a landscape layout is recommended as it provides the opportunity
to add additional columns for sorting key words and entering follow-up actions.

Insert columns and headings

Use the Insert Columns from the Table menu to add columns, resize them and enter titles:

No. Topic Statement Comment Labels
                                                            and
                                                            actions

On 11th May 1983, three telexes purporting
to have been sent by machine 45407 in the
Banco de la Republica were received by Chase
Manhattan Bank in London. These instructions
which were not authenticated by a test key,
appeared to authorize the transfer of US$13.5
million from an account maintained by Chase
for the Ministry de Hacienda to the account
of the Republic of Colombia with Morgan
Guaranty Trust Company of New York.
Prior to this, all instructions from Banco de la
Republica to Chase had been authenticated
and test key arrangements between the two
banks had been in force since 1952.

Read carefully and break into blocks

At this stage the story should be in one column and one row. Read the document thoroughly
and identify the critical issues. In the above case it was what happened on 11 May in the wire
transfer room. Break the table into frames by cutting and pasting phrases and sentences into
new rows: Table 8.3 in the dingo case gives an example of frames. Make sure you do not jumble
the sequence of the story.
