On 11th May 1983, three telexes purporting to 45407
have been sent by machine 45407 in the Banco
de la Republica Chase
Test Key
were received by Chase Manhattan Bank in
London. Hacienda
These instructions which were not Morgan
authenticated by a test key, appeared to
authorize the transfer of US$13.5 million
from an account maintained by Chase for the
Ministry de Hacienda to the account of the
Republic of Colombia with
Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York.
Prior to this, all instructions from Banco de la
Republica to Chase had been authenticated
and test key arrangements between the two
banks had been in force since 1952.
Use the Find and Highlight facilities
At this point, you should not enter the sequence numbers in column 1 because as you get
deeper into the analysis you are likely to make further breaks and create new rows. You can,
however, start to enter what could be important labels (nouns and pronouns) and verbs in
column 5. You can then use Microsoft Word’s Find and Highlight facilities to locate and mark
every time the labels appear in the text, also highlighting column 5 to show that you have
done so. In our example we have searched for all occurrences in the text of ‘Chase’. Normally
you would not complete this flagging until you have reviewed the text in depth and really
determined what labels are important.
Get into the detail
This is where the detailed work begins and you should go through the text frame by frame,
word for word entering your comments in column 3 and highlighting anything of interest
as well as flagging labels and actions in column 5. It is a long and difficult iterative process.
Initially we recommend you focus on just areas and highlight possibly significant points in
yellow and dates and times in red (Table 8.5).
