New Hanover This was an idea that
High School businessman Jim Harper

because of the need
for more people in the
industrial segment of
business. There is a need
of people with the ability

Thinking. Another reason
for the challenge was to
get the students together
and work with each other
in designing and building
a Rat Rod.
It all started with one
school: ATC and in a
couple months had grown
to 9 schools. One as far
away as Alabama, all
building a vehicle.
These are the rules of the
Challenge:
Vehicle must be built
by students with the
guidance of an instructor.
y Vehicle must be built
from parts from at least
10 different vehicles
y Vehicle cost must stay
within a $5000 budget.
(funding provided)
y Options to obtain more
funding are available
(contact Charlotte
STEAM for details).
y Must use STEAM vs.
STEM curriculum.
y R.A.T. Rod must be
operable and safe for
the road.
y The students must video
their building process
and progress and edit
it to make a loop video
to be displayed on
New Hanover a fl at screen TV in
High School front of their car at
Wilmington, NC Charlotte STEAMFest to
show how they built it.
