“When the R.A.T. Rod builders have completed their projects,
they will have attained a body of knowledge about how vehicles
are built, all the intricacies of engines, transmissions, drive
trains, electrical and hydraulic systems, and water pumps. More
importantly, however, they will have engaged in complex problem
solving and innovative thinking, because making the parts fit
together and work (they are required to use parts from at least 10
different vehicles) requires the students to redesign many elements,
create new ones, test and retest to determine what works, and to
