hen you hear the name
‘Mercury,’ what comes to mind?
A ’49 – ’51 lead sled? How
Wabout the lithe, yet luxurious
Cougars of the late ‘60’s? Maybe your
grandfather’s white ’07 Grand Marquis
with gold trim and a padded roof?
What you probably did NOT think of
was a pickup truck. Ford of Canada
did indeed sell rebadged Ford pickup
trucks under the Mercury nameplate
from 1946 through 1968 as a way to
increase availability through the Mercury
dealership network.
Drew Leger of Lumby, British
Columbia picked up his ’47 half-ton
variant of the marque off kijiji (kind of
like Craigslist for Canadians) about four
years ago. It was fairly complete, but
missing the hood. It was built to be a
daily driver and it has been that and
then some, taking several trips all over
Canada and knocking down a steady 30
MPG the whole time.
One of the fi rst things Drew did was
ditch the stock frame and drivetrain and
substitute one from a ‘92 Dodge Ð ton
2wd, including the fi rst-gen Cummins
12V and 5 speed. With only 330,000 km
on the clock, there’s plenty of life left on
the old oil-burner.
