Prior to the races, which
occurred on the sandy dunes of
Pismo State Beach, visitors could
stroll through the campground to
get up close and personal with the
many cars, bikes and trailers along
with the men and women who
make this event friendly to the fans
of rebuilt classics from yesteryear.
It wasn’t just the cars and bikes
that were required to be period
correct, many of the racers and
fans also dressed the part. Which
made this guest feel as if he had
been transported almost 100 years
back in the past.
Although the rain did eventually
stop the race from continuing onto
Sunday, Saturday was fi lled with
heat after heat of pre-1936 vehicles
dueling it out just a stone’s throw
from the raging Pacifi c Ocean.
Fans continued to cheer on
each race as four banger fl at heads
pushed themselves to the limit
while gutsy bikers also raced on
the beaches, dangerously letting
go of the bars to shift into a higher
gear on a less than ideal surface.
The weather on Saturday did
let up just enough towards the end
of the day to allow for a special
treat as Hot Rod Vee accepted
the marriage proposal of Derek
“Boxrod” Campbell, a couple of Hot
Rod enthusiasts who traveled from
Las Vegas in their ‘32 Model A, to
be a part of this historic event.
Let’s hope enough fun was had
by all so that TROG will take place
again next year on the west coast.
