Example 2: Ashtray mounted
switchbox (18 gauge steel)
I had a customer that wanted to fi t
his air ride controller in his original
c-10 ashtray. So, I stretched the
original ashtray 2.5” to account for
the switchbox’s length. Taking time
to layout the bends & bead rolls
here is crucial to the end result/fi t.
Bend allowances were considered
here because it was necessary for
the fi nished product to have smooth
seams and transitions to allow
for proper sliding of the ashtray’s
bearings. I considered every option
like a chess game here, because it
has to be done in a certain order to
turn out proper. A soft offset die on
my Mittler bead roller added form &
function to the fi nished faceplate. To

Tip: Use of a dial caliper and
scribing tools is essential for more
intricate work like this.
