at these crossroads that we either choose to take a leap into the unknown and grow, or to stay right where we are and become root-bound. “Does it really have to be one or the other? Can’t we simply stay happy and content right where we are?” Do you want the long answer or the short answer? The short answer is “No,” and I suspect you already knew that.
The difference between you and my rosemary plant is the fact that we can see when the plant is getting root-bound. There it is, plain as day, crowded and cramped. All I had to do is turn it over for the final confirmation! Roots sticking out? Yep, this one needs change.
It’s not as easy to recognize our own need for transition. We get comfortable and cozy and are tempted to think, “Change is scary. Growth is risky. I’ll just stay here for a little while longer.” The only problem with this is the fact that God wants better things for us, even when we are a little resistant to the plan. He will allow situations to occur to force us into change, and that’s perfectly okay. But we can actually learn to recognize when a season or time period is over (or when we’re becoming root- bound) and begin to make the decision to push past the terror barrier on our own.
