Page 73 - Life is a Fight for Territory
P. 73

Do you spend excessive amounts of time on social media? If so, what do you do there? Are you spending a little bit of down time enjoying photos of your best friend’s vacation or checking out Aunt Beth’s latest 5k run? Or - and let’s be brutally honest here - do you find yourself caught up in the latest complaints, hook-ups, break-downs or other such drama? Do you ever look up your ex? Do you see a picture of an old friend with a new woman and immediately check their status to find out if they are divorced? Even worse, do you ever call a mutual friend to ask, “What’s going on with so-and-so? I just saw their status.”
If the answer to any of the questions above is yes, we’ve just uncovered your hidden love of drama.

Next question. Do you find yourself getting sucked into the problems of your family and friends? Bringing good advice to the table once in a while or being a source of support in times of crisis is one thing, but spending hours listening to the juicy details of every problem is quite another. And are you really offering responsible support, or are you feeding a craving for drama? Hmmmm. This might be the first time you’ve even thought of it this way, but if you find yourself ‘having to know what’s going on’ you might be in trouble.
If you’ve been raised in a family that has a good amount of dysfunction, you may not even be aware that it’s difficult for you to operate without chaos in your life. If it’s not going on in your own household, you’ll go looking for it somewhere else — a friend, neighbor, workmate, it doesn’t matter. You just want to hear the details.
