TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
BAL is a registered training organisation (RTO 40741) and offers an accredited Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management (CUA 40313). This can be taken in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop styles, and is available to all dance teachers from any background or dance organisation (meeting BAL criteria). BAL also provides the TAE components of the course internally, making it unnecessary to complete these modules at a TAFE or similar training venue. BAL also offers an internal Teaching Certificate III available in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop, as a pre-requisite for membership to BAL.
Teacher training intakes and courses are offered each January and July.
BAL’s friendly and approachable team is committed to offering technical support to teacher members at all times. Lessons with examiners can be requested at any time, while a technical advisor for each genre is always available to answer any syllabus enquiries not requiring a full examiner’s lesson.
COMPETITIONS AND AWARDS:
All exam candidates receive a written report and a personalised Certificate of Achievement. Students receiving passes of 97% or higher also receive an Excellence Award, while candidates for senior exams receive a Senior Achievement Medal in recognition of their loyalty and dedication to BAL.
Perpetual trophies are awarded each year to BAL studios with the highest exam Honour Points in all genres.
Diamond Star Group Competition is held in May each year and all studios from any organisation are welcome.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
BAL Summer School is held in Sydney each January, with a week of syllabus classes offering helpful corrections, suggestions, and exam insights to assist teachers.
Workshops are regularly held in Auckland for our New Zealand members,
and also in Sydney mid year whenever syllabus revisions are made.
PHILOSOPHY:
BAL aims to offer syllabi that can extend the more gifted student as well as providing encouragement and success
to the average student, thereby acknowledging and catering to the range of abilities usually found in most dance studios. The various syllabi incorporate a range of styles, from the traditional
to the latest trends, to encourage the development of versatile dancers who are able to adjust to the requirements of any choreographer.
BAL aims to provide teachers with all their syllabus and professional training needs from one organisation, thereby avoiding duplication of exam sessions in your studio, cutting multiple organisation membership fees, and reducing dealings with different administrations.
History:
BAL (Ballet Australasia Ltd) was founded in 1989 by dance educators who wanted an Australian-based organisation catering for the syllabus needs of dance teachers and students. Initially providing exam syllabi in Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap, and National Character, BAL’s range soon expanded to include a comprehensive Hip Hop syllabus (co- choreographed by BJ Rorke), a new Jazz syllabus choreographed by Joel Peisley, and more recently an additional Tap syllabus named “Tap’N’Beats” which has been choreographed by Nathan Sheens, a founding Tap Dogs member.
As a dance organisation committed solely to its dance teacher members, and in response to changing industry standards, BAL further extended its scope by becoming a registered training organisation (RTO) and offers an accredited Certificate IV in Dance Teaching and Management (CUA 40313) which can be taken in Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Hip Hop styles.
This two-fold commitment to members – the provision of quality dance syllabi, coupled with accredited teacher training, makes BAL a great choice for dance teachers of all genres.
