History:
The AICD is a not for profit organisation that provides training, assessments and other services to classical ballet teachers and students. Our goal is to ensure that high quality classical ballet training and opportunities through scholarships and awards, is available
to the broadest number of young Australian dancers possible. An integral part of the AICD as an organization is the Borovansky Syllabus. The syllabus originated from the school of the Borovansky Academy of Russian Ballet which opened its studios in Melbourne in 1939, with Madam Xenia Borovansky (wife of Edouard Borovansky) as the central pillar of classical ballet teaching.
AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CLASSICAL DANCE
She passed on the technique and style in which she had been trained in Russia, which was largely based on the Vaganova system of training. Edouard Borovansky went on to establish the Borovansky Ballet Company, the precursor of the Australian Ballet. The Borovansky Syllabus, which has been upgraded by the AICD to reflect the contemporary Australian dance teaching methods, caters for students from Pre-Primary through to Solo Seal.
FOUNDER/DIRECTOR:
Marilyn Jones: OBE former ballerina and artistic director of the Australian Ballet Company. Marilyn founded the Australian Institute of Classical Dance (AICD) in 1992 as the main project of her Australian Creative Fellowship. Marilyn has enjoyed a brilliant career in dance and is highly respected in the international dance world. GRADING SYSTEM:
The AICD offers and administers two grading systems; Examination and Assessment. We provide examinations for each grade from Pre-Primary to Solo Seal. Assessments are ideal for students who, for some reason, may not be able to cope with the challenge of an examination but would still like an external assessment.
MARKING AND ASSESSMENT:
Students are issued with medals, certificates and written reports. Scholarships towards the cost of future training are awarded to outstanding students at major levels. Our independent, interstate examiners come to schools throughout Australia to conduct examinations and assessments.
TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
The AICD has a three-tiered qualification system: Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship levels, with prior credentials in other syllabi being recognised and valued. More information on teaching accreditation can be found under “Teaching” on our website, www.ballet.org.au
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
The AICD does not see other syllabi
as competitors but seeks to unite organisations to assist in supporting dance teachers, students and aspiring choreographers. We desire to develop Australian dance by provide teaching seminars and choreographic workshops. We hold many events throughout the country such as, The AICD International
Awards, AICD Houston Ballet Academy Scholarship, AICD New Zealand Ballet School Scholarship and Dance Creation which are not restricted to Borovansky students but open to all dancers. The AICD also provides an Adult Assessment Program. This six-level programme is designed for Pre-adult (16/17) through
to mature-aged students, who have been part of adult ballet classes for
a year or two or individuals returning
to ballet after a hiatus of many years.
It is available to teachers of all syllabi. Assessments can be arranged by contacting the AICD National examination/assessment body. Updates and details about our scholarships and events can be found in the AICD website and Facebook.
