AUSTRALIAN DANCE VISION (ADV)
History:
Founded in 1989 Australian Dance Vision (ADV) created a wholly Australian dance education system. This curriculum offers a holistic approach to dance, embracing creativity, musicality, body science, history , safe dance, stage craft and teamwork – the aim being to provide a complete ‘dance education’ that creates thinking dancers with nutritional and academic knowledge that prepared them for ‘life’ as well as dance.
Parents see this as a ‘safety net’ for their children and recognise that this prepares them for their daily well being as well as employment, with an eye to related careers beyond dance, into tertiary qualifications as more mature aged students.
The ADV syllabus paved the way for national vocational education and training courses in dance – now endorsed via Australian Dance Institute (ADV’s partner company). Students are gaining professional qualifications in dance and teachers in dance students, parents, teachers and assessors in its aim to train not just technically proficient dancers but articulate creative and expressive professionals.

GRADING SYSTEM:
Students have the option of receiving a report and grade or a report and comment only. Grades include Honours with Distinction, Honours, Highly Commended, Commended, Pass+ and Pass.
ADV students are assessed against a defined set of benchmark criteria rather than the subjective opinion of an examiner. Students advance at their own rate taking into account their cognitive, emotional and physical development.
MARKING AND ASSESSMENT:
ADV has developed a unique, transparent and documented assessment system giving teachers, parents and students a range of options. Teachers have input into the outcome of the assessment and assessors have annual professional development training as well as teaching and assessing qualifications. The ADV syllabus is endorsed by Australian Dance institute, which provides students with the opportunity to obtain nationally recognised certificates in dance via ADi Certified Schools.
TEACHER QUALIFICATIONS:
ADV Dance Teaching Certificate
ADV Advance Dance teaching Certificate
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
Annual professional development workshops are held for teachers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
PHILOSOPHY:
ADV’s found the philosophy and original concept engaged students in performance-to give them the ‘real life’ theatre experience. This was done through a youth dance company Ballet d’Action (BdA) giving young dancers the opportunity to work with professional choreographers, composers and theatre practitioners. BdA created 22 new dance works where students actively contributed through artistic input and involvement in productions. This work then “morphed” into the current ADV syllabus, and separately into Australian Dance Institute (ADi) and National VET Dance Standards.
