For a variety of legal and operating reasons, it is necessary to define the working status of each
employee. The employment status refers to the nature of the job responsibilities and weekly work
schedule and affects their eligibility for benefit programs. The terms “staff” refers to all employees,
except faculty.
The categories of employment used at APUS are described below.
Full-time (FT) Employee: An employee who is regularly scheduled to work a minimum of 30 hours per
week.
Full-time (FT) Faculty: Please refer to the Faculty Handbook for more information.
Part-time (PT) Employee: An employee who is regularly scheduled to work less than 30 hours per week.
Part-time (PT) Faculty: Please refer to the Faculty Handbook for more information.
Non-Employees: Consultants, contractors, and workers from temporary service agencies are not
employees of APUS. Non-employees are not eligible for APUS's employee benefits.
APUS Temporary Employees: Employees hired by APUS management to fulfill a particular role on a
defined temporary basis of six months or less. Temporary employees are not eligible to participate in
APUS health benefits and the variable incentive pay program, and may not accrue sick and vacation
leave. However, temporary employees are eligible to participate in the APUS retirement plans.
Temporary employees may eventually be hired into regular positions within APUS, but their seniority
date will be reflected by the date of hire into the regular full or part-time position.
APUS Long-term Temporary Employees: Employees hired by APUS management to fulfill a particular role
on a defined temporary basis of six months or longer. Temporary employees are typically not eligible to
participate in APUS health benefits and the variable incentive pay program and may not accrue sick and
vacation leave. Long-term temporary employees may be eligible to participate in APUS’s medical plans
based upon the one year ‘look-back’ period if hours worked average 30 or more per week for a one year
period. Long-term temporary employees should confer with the Benefits Department in HR for more
information. Temporary employees are eligible to participate in the APUS retirement plans. Temporary
employees may eventually be hired into regular positions within APUS, but their seniority date will be
reflected by the date of hire into the regular full or part-time position.
APUS Interns: Interns hired by APUS management to fulfill a particular role on a defined part-time and
temporary basis. Interns are typically not eligible to participate in APUS health benefits and the variable
incentive pay program and may not accrue sick and vacation leave. Interns may be eligible to participate
