Directions : Read the following text.
Rumah Rakit is a traditional floating house that represents a unique
and historic architectural feature of Palembang. These houses can be
found along the banks of the Musi River and reflect the city’s identity as a
“city of water.” They also show how people in Palembang have adapted
to living close to the river for many years.
Rumah Rakit floats on water and is built on a strong raft made of
wooden beams and bamboo. Poles are placed at the four corners to keep
the house stable. These poles are tied with strong rattan ropes to posts
fixed on the riverbank, so the house does not drift away.
The house has a rectangular shape, but the length and width are
almost the same, making it look nearly square. The roof has two sides and
is known as a kajang roof. Inside, the house is usually divided into two
main parts and has two doors. One door faces the riverbank, while the
other faces the middle of the river. Windows are located on both sides of
the house. A small bridge connects the house to the land, while boats are
used to visit neighbors.
