A Message To All Mathletes and Coaches
The Lincoln Chapter would like to thank and congratulate all students and coaches in advance for your
participation in the 2018 MATHCOUNTS Competition. This year we have 26 schools and 205 students
registered for the competition from three South-Central Pennsylvania counties.
Every year we strive to provide, along with our sponsors, partners, volunteers, and Millersville University
an event that is enjoyable and memorable, and try to take the opportunity to introduce engineering and
related STEM disciplines to you and provide some context to your exceptional mathematics skills and
potential uses for it.
This year we have chosen to introduce Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and drones in engineering and
related fields, and how the future use of the technology can positively impact our world. Skill sets like
mathematics and engineering are integral to unlocking those potentials. Should you someday consider a
career in engineering we encourage you to reach out to the Lincoln Chapter Pennsylvania Society of
Professional Engineers. We would be happy to answer your questions, encourage you to shadow one of
our many members on the job, and ask about our scholarship program.
We appreciate your dedication and efforts and hope this day is one that you will be able to look back on
with pride and achievement.
From all of us good luck both in today’s competition and your futures.
Consider Engineering
It’s never to early too think about your future! The Lincoln Chapter PSPE Board and it’s members, would
like to invite you to consider the possibilities of a career in Engineering, Technology, and Science.
Engineers and engineering technology professionals are innovators who turn ideas into realities. They
envision new ways to solve problems and focus on making things work more efficiently and
effectively. The discipline of engineering is wide and vast and includes many areas of expertise including
aeronautical, architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, medical, nuclear, transportation, and structural to
name just a few.
Through the use of math, physics, chemistry, and many other disciplines, engineers invent amazing
technologies such as computers, DSL, cellular phones, microchips, and solar panels among many other
devices, and facilitate the transportation of people and objects with cars, trains, ships, and airplanes, over
bridges, roads, airports...all which require engineering.
The work of engineers helps to ensure our daily health, safety and happiness. DVD players, radio,
television, computers, airplanes, space vehicles, cars, motorcycles, home appliances, life-saving medical
equipment, computer games, and video games represent a mere sampling of the now familiar facets of
life made possible through engineering.
The work of engineers and technology professionals has a big impact on our world. We are counting on
the ingenuity and creativity of these professionals to develop innovative solutions for the 21st
century such as developing sustainable energy solutions, designing technologies to improve our health,
creating systems that support our communities, designing electronics that assist people in need, and more
importantly working to preserve our planet for generations to come.
The Lincoln Chapter PSPE Board and members are always happy to answer questions regarding the
engineering profession. Our vast membership in a variety of engineering disciplines is an excellent
resource to have if you are ever interested in a career in engineering, math, and science. Please visit us at
