About MATHCOUNTS
MATHCOUNTS provides fun and challenging math programs for US middle school students to increase
their academic and professional opportunities.
With the generous support of all MATHCOUNTS sponsors and volunteers, and leadership of the
National Society of Professional Engineers at the local and state levels, MATHCOUNTS is providing
today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics
careers.
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school
mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory.
Currently in our 34th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education
partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students. Former Presidents
Barack Obama, Presidents George W. Bush, William J. Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Ronald W.
Reagan have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in White House ceremonies. The MATHCOUNTS program
has also received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Particularly
exciting for our Mathletes® were the hour-long ESPN programs on each of the National Competitions
from 2003-2005. In 2011 the National Competition returned to ESPN with a live broadcast on ESPN3.
The program’s mission is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school
mathematics throughout the United States. The “mathletes” benefit from a sense of accomplishment
that comes from setting and achieving goals, meeting new students from other schools, developing
teamwork skills, competing for prizes and scholarships, and exploring “cool” mathematics that are not
routinely taught at the middle school level. Most importantly, MATHCOUNTS builds math skills,
promotes logical thinking, and sharpens the analytical ability of all involved students, a critical part of
growing up in our technological world.
The coaching phase of the program starts in the fall at each participating school, covering everything
from basic arithmetic skills to math logic, probability and statistics, linear algebra, and polynomials.
Our regional competition will send the top team and four top “mathletes” to the state competition in
Harrisburg on March 23 & 24, 2018. The top four students in Pennsylvania will compete in Washington
DC on May 13 & 14, 2018, for National Honors.
MATHCOUNTS is organized and administered by the MATHCOUNTS Foundation and the National
Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) state and local chapters. Pennsylvania is proud to be one of
the leading states in the nation in the number of schools participating. Reaching all students, not just
our select winners, is the true intent of our program.
The MATHCOUNTS Foundation is a nonprofit organization. For more information about MATHCOUNTS,
