1. Just  as  four  stages  are  seen  in  the  creation  of  a  painting,  in  the  same  way,  four  stages  of

                modification in the Supreme Self should be  known.

                2. As  in  the  creation  of  a  painting,  the  canvas  is  cleaned,  stiffened    with  starch,  marked  with

                outlines, and then painted; so also, in the  case of the Supreme Self, there is correspondingly pure
                Consciousness, the in-dwelling Consciousness (Ishvara), the one identified with the totality of all

                the subtle bodies (Sutratma or Hiranyagarbha), and the one identified with the totality of all gross

                bodies (Virat).

                3. The canvas, which is white by nature, is cleaned (is the basis of a painted picture), stiffened by

                applying starch, marked with black outlines, and painted by filling colors. These are the four stages
                of the painting.
