indeed; mayavI = when conditioned by power of illusion; sUúms&iòt> = in relation to subtle bodies;
sUÇaTma = connecting all the souls; SwUls&ò(a = in relation to gross bodies; @v = only; ivraqœ =
Virat; #it = thus; %Cyte = is said; pr> = Supreme Self.
4. The Supreme Self, which by nature is pure Consciousness (is the basis of all modifications). When
conditioned by (His own) power of illusion known as Maya, He is known as the in-dwelling spirit
(Ishvara). In relation with the subtle bodies, He is the totality of souls identifying Himself with
them (Sutratma or Hiranyagarbha). In relation with the gross bodies, He is again the one
identifying Himself with their totality (Virat).

beings; AÇ = here; jfa> = inert (objects); Aip = also; %Äm-Axm-Éaven = with superior and
inferior objects; vtRNte = are; pqicÇvt! = as a painting on canvas.
5. Just as in a picture drawn on a canvas, there are superior and inferior objects, in the same way,
superimposed on the Supreme Self, there are grades of beings from Brahma to a blade of grass,
sentient beings and inert objects.
