b. If the patient isn't responding to CPR consider using an AED (automated external
defibrillator).
Initial Assessment:
1. Verbalize your general impression of the patient, what injuries do you see?
2. What is there L.O.C (level-of-consciousness)? Ask them the following questions:
a. "What's your name?"
b. "Do you know where you are right now?"
c. "Do you know what day it is?"
d. "Do you know what year it is?"
e. "Do you know what happened?"
3. If the patient is unconscious or showing signs of a head injury consider applying a C-Collar
before moving on.
4. Is the patient responding to one of the following stimulation:
Alert Responsive and coherent to stimulation
Verbal Responds to verbal stimulation
Pain Responds to pain stimulation
Unresponsive Does NOT respond to all stimulation
5. With a responsive patient ask them what, or where, it hurts as you examine them for further
injuries.
a. If the patient is in pain they may ask for medication to alleviate the pain. DO NOT give
them anything at this point in time as It could unknowingly further endanger the patient's life.
6. While conducting your exam perform your ABC's.
A.) Check the Airway -- Is there anything obstructing the airway?
B.) Check Breathing -- Are they breathing regularly?
C.) Check Circulation -- How is there pulse? Is there skin color or temperature at irregular
levels?
7. While checking their vitals do a Blood Sweep. Are they bleeding anywhere?
a. If you spot blood on the patient identify the source of the bleed.
b. Do they need a Tourniquet or Bandage to help stop it. Apply as needed.
8. Do you see or feel any broken bones?
a. Use an Air Cast for any broken extremities such as arms or legs.
b. Put a C-Collar on if you suspect any type of neck, spine, or head injury.
c. If a shoulder is dislocated DO NOT attempt to reset it. Instead immobilize it in a
comfortable position with a sling.
i. A friendly pillow placed between the arm and torso provide appreciated extra
comfort for the patient.
9. Is the patient in Shock at this time? Give them a Mylar Space Blanket Wrap to help conserve
body heat and aid in calming them down.
