Trainee
As a trainee you are not allowed to treat patients on your own. Your main job is to observe
your trainer and follow their instructions when they ask for aid. You will be required to train for 2
weeks, or 120 hrs, under the guidance of a Lead Paramedic or higher rank. Once you complete
the training you will become an EMT, the lowest field level position of the department.
Promotions and Demotions
EMS staff can work their way up the ranks by following the guidelines mentioned in the
Ranks section of the handbook. Each rank comes with new skills you can learn and apply in field
when on call. After a set amount of time at that level you can apply for a promotion wherein a
Lead Paramedic, Director, or Deputy Chief will conduct your training over the next couple weeks.
Alternatively, a Lead Paramedic or Deputy Chief can suggest a member for promotion to either
Director. The final decision about your promotion, however, will be made by the Directors.
Demotions are also possible should a member of staff be found to be abusing the power of
their position in any way. Selling medical equipment, stealing from the hospital, freely giving away
medication, or abusing medication intended for patient use can result in rank removal, pay
deduction, and or a short suspension as possible consequences.
Any time a staff member is demoted they must wait the recommended time of a standard
promotion before being able to reapply for the position. A member of staff can only receive 3
demotions over the course of their career. A fourth demotion will result in termination from EMS.
If a choice is made that you do not agree with or understand, please contact the Director
or Co-Director to schedule a meeting regarding the decision. We are more than willing to sit down
and calmly discuss the issues at hand.
