strategy address In the age of COVID, Carol asked me how I felt about a virtual
party for my February birthday. I, of course, immediately became sus-
new healthcare picious. Whereas some people might think she was planning this big
Zoom shindig that’s just not her style. With Carol, what you see is
what you get. If she says virtual, she means a cake I can see, but prob-
ably can’t eat, a gift card with a zero balance, not to mention a sparse-
realities? ly populated Zoom screen. (Unlike me, Carol’s not too big on sched-
uling Zoom meetings.) My special birthday dinner will probably con-
sist of a Lean Cuisine that exceeds her limit of 350 calories.
My mind also immediately “zoomed” in on possible presents.
Ask the experts. Carol’s response was just take a look around our house. In the midst
of our kitchen disaster/rebuild, a stranger might mistake our home for
Lowe’s or Home Depot. In the empty kitchen (and I do mean empty –
no cabinets, no sink – basically we’re what the Alaskans call living in
a “dry cabin”) we have a dishwasher in a box and stove in a box.
Enter our extra bedroom and you can find our new sink, microwave
drawer, sink faucet and miscellaneous cabinet hardware. Basically, we are living in 2 rooms and our garage aka the tempo-
rary kitchen. We travel from our bedroom to our home office to the garage sink and workbench with our toaster oven,
Keurig and microwave. (Even our UPS driver knows he can get a cup of coffee in our garage.)
But after an entire year of living with the isolation of COVID-19, masks, sanitizers and a demolished kitchen, I am not
complaining. Not only did we get our new floors finally installed, even more important we got vaccinated with our first
dose of vaccine. So, there is light at the end of this tunnel, but I have a funny feeling it’s not coming from candles on my
