3. The Noun

Sentences are made up of words. These words belong to different

classes or groups. These groups or classes are called parts of speech.

There are eight parts of speech: noun, adjective, pronoun, verb,

adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. Now, we are going to

discuss nouns in detail.

Noun

Look at the following sentences:

1. Neha is going to school.

2. The dog is barking.

3. The pen is on the table.

In sentence, (1), ‘Neha ’ is the name of a person, and ‘school ’ is the

name of a place.

In sentence (2), ‘The dog ’ is the name of an animal.

In sentence (3), ‘The pen ’ and ‘the table ’ are the names of things.

These naming words are called nouns.

The names of persons, animals, things and places are called nouns .
