2. The Parts of Sentence






          Now, you will study how many parts of a sentence are there.

          There are two parts in a sentence.


                  1.     Subject                             2.     Predicate

          1.      Subject: The part of a sentence that tells us the person or the thing spoken
                  about is called the subject       .

                  For example:


                  1.     The students      are going on an educational trip.

                  2.     The cat   is sleeping peacefully.

                  In sentence (1) , the subject is ‘the students’ who do the action.

                  In sentence (2) , the subject is ‘the cat’ who does the action.

          2.      Predicate: The part of a sentence that tells us something about the subject

                  is called the predicate      .

                  For example:

                  1.     The bird is flying   .

                  2.     Ram is an intelligent boy       .

                  In sentence (1) , ‘is flying’ is the predicate.

                  In sentence (2) , ‘is an intelligent boy’ is the predicate.


                  Look at the following sentence:

                         The girls     are   not tired.
