the ritual’s spiritual significance becomes clear. While consuming literal leavened bread
during Pesach may not seem like a serious moral transgression, what it represents -
failing to rid ourselves of Yetzer Ha-Ra and arrogance - might indeed warrant karet.
Perhaps the physical ceremony makes it easier for us to connect with and visualize the
spiritual work we must do on Pesach.

The idea that we must rid ourselves of the Yetzer Ha-Ra and arrogance that leads us to
treat others disrespectfully is set in the heart of the Seder. Amid the celebration and
storytelling, we take a moment to humble ourselves and remember the Egyptians who
suffered and lost their lives as a result of the Ten Plagues. We understand they were
human beings deserving of respect, who were created B’tzelem Elokim (in the image of
G-d). Just as we remember the Egyptians who suffered, so too must we ensure that we are
not causing suffering today. Pesach is an opportunity to rid ourselves of spiritual
chametz, to humble ourselves, and to take internal stock of whether we are treating others
with the respect, kindness, and dignity that they deserve. Chag Sameach.
