In this chapter, you will learn how to
1 Identify the purposes of an introduction.
2 Write an effective introduction that fits the purpose of your
essay.
Temptation. It works on readers, too. After all, no
one has to read your essay. Your job is to make
them want to read it. An artfully placed image, an
exciting story, or a carefully chosen quotation can
be irresistible, pulling a reader into your essay.
However, an introduction is more than just a way
to draw a reader in. It does several jobs that no
other part of the essay could do quite so
effectively.
