Learning Objectives

In this chapter, you will learn how to

1 Identify the purposes of an introduction.

2 Write an effective introduction that fits the purpose of your

                        essay.

Temptation. It works on readers, too. After all, no

one has to read your essay. Your job is to make

them want to read it. An artfully placed image, an

exciting story, or a carefully chosen quotation can
be irresistible, pulling a reader into your essay.

However, an introduction is more than just a way

to draw a reader in. It does several jobs that no

other part of the essay could do quite so

               effectively.
