Types of Introduction











                             2        Write an effective introduction that fits the

                                      purpose of your essay.









               Introductions that draw a reader in don’t just happen; they are

               carefully crafted. Following are several types of introduction. Try them

               all, using the examples as models.






               Broad to Narrow






               The broad-to-narrow introduction is a classic style of introduction.

               Sometimes called the inverted triangle introduction, it funnels your

               reader from a broad statement of your topic to the narrowest point in
               the introduction: your thesis.




                Example of Broad-to-Narrow Introduction

               Cell phones are almost everyone’s number one accessory. They are

               handy for emergencies or just to keep in touch with family and

               friends, so people take them everywhere. They tag along to the
