A jeweler judges the quality of a diamond by “The
Four C’s”—color, cut, clarity, and carat weight.
Evaluating by these four standards, the jeweler
can determine the value of the gem.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could apply similar
standards to writing? We can. Direction, unity,
coherence, and support are the standards that
measure paragraph and essay writing. Check
your essays against these standards to see if you
have created a real gem—or at least a diamond in
the rough.
