Exercise 4-6 Historical Introductions
Look at each of the following thesis statements and decide whether
the writer needs to use a historical introduction (1) to establish
authority or (2) to set the stage. Write your choice in the blank beneath
each question and be prepared to give reasons for your answer.
1. If you are not satisfied with a product or service, complain
immediately, speak to the right person, and suggest a solution
to the problem.
2. Moving away from home has made me more independent,
more confident in my abilities, and more appreciative of my
parents.
3. Helpful coworkers, a pleasant workplace, and an understanding
boss make my job enjoyable.
4. Setting up your computer and printer is easier than you think.
5. To get a good bargain in a used car, you must do the proper
research, have the car checked by a professional, and know
how to negotiate with the dealer.
