Exercise 4-6 Historical Introductions

Look at each of the following thesis statements and decide whether

the writer needs to use a historical introduction (1) to establish

authority or (2) to set the stage. Write your choice in the blank beneath

each question and be prepared to give reasons for your answer.

                    1. If you are not satisfied with a product or service, complain

immediately, speak to the right person, and suggest a solution

                        to the problem.

                    2. Moving away from home has made me more independent,

more confident in my abilities, and more appreciative of my

                        parents.

                    3. Helpful coworkers, a pleasant workplace, and an understanding

                        boss make my job enjoyable.

                    4. Setting up your computer and printer is easier than you think.

                    5. To get a good bargain in a used car, you must do the proper

research, have the car checked by a professional, and know

how to negotiate with the dealer.
