Coherence: Holding the Essay

               Together

4 Identify what gives a body paragraph

                                      coherence.

An essay with coherence is an essay with solid and strong

connections between paragraphs and ideas. To achieve coherence,

you must first make sure that the ideas you set down are logically

related and well thought out. Coherence between ideas can also be
aided by transitional words and expressions. Just as mortar between

bricks makes a wall strong, logical connections and artfully used

transitional expressions cement the parts of your essay together in a

               reader’s mind.

Following is a list of transitional words and expressions, organized by
               their function within the sentence.
